Biology is a hugely interesting but complex and undoubtedly challenging subject.

With so much to learn and remember (not to mention the specificity of mark schemes and exam technique needed) it's no wonder many students can feel overwhelmed or struggle to keep up.

That's where a dedicated Biology tutor can make a difference. With one-to-one private tutoring, students receive personalised attention and support to help them achieve their academic goals.

Here’s how we will work together ✏️

Sessions are conducted online, over Zoom, or within a 15 minute radius of my home in Ringwood, Hampshire*, at a time convenient to you.

Bespoke high quality resources are provided every week. Students will receive lesson resources to complete during the session as well as follow-up independent study packs to consolidate their learning.

Short term or long term, flexible tuition: Whether you'd like a regular weekly tuition slot to maximise progress over the year or a few booster sessions around mock exams to hone exam technique, there is no minimum booking time.

Friendly & professional tuition from a qualified teacher & examiner who has 10 years of experience of supporting students to success. You can rest assured that your child is in good hands.

There’s no such thing as a silly question. Individualised support ensures your child never gets “lost in the class” or feels that they are unable to ask questions. We work quickly to establish a safe, relaxed working environment where students feel comfortable to share their ideas and questions.

Access to the 'Bio Boost' Facebook and WhatsApp groups are included - a supportive community where students can access help with homework, independent study & revision through the week.

*Clients over 15 minutes away may be accepted on my discretion but will be charged extra for travel expenses & time. Alternatively, clients are welcome at my home but must be comfortable with the presence of a large (but very docile and quiet!) dog.

What does a typical 1:1 tuition lesson look like?

Retrieval practice on previous sessions. This usually involves short, targeted questions or exam questions on the content and skills covered in the lesson before. Research has shown that revisiting and ‘retrieving’ factual content helps to embed it into our long term memories, avoiding the need for last minute cramming!

Sessions are bespoke to each student and we will agree a focus prior to the lesson. This may be revising content for deep understanding, practising exam questions and focussing on exam technique or more usually, a bit of both! I teach using my iPad and Apple Pencil, allowing me to annotate our discussions and answers directly onto resources, draw diagrams or annotate notes and key points on to resources as we go so students can focus on developing their understanding and engaging in the session.

We finish by focussing on exam technique and applying the knowledge from the session to relevant exam questions. I model and show students how to decode what the examiner is looking for and write high quality, full mark answers. We work together to practise these skills and students are then set a relevant ‘feedback task’ for the week. They submit this to me for marking and feedback on how to improve at a time convenient for them in between sessions.

Frequently asked questions

  • No problem! Sessions are recorded and you can watch the session back at a time that’s convenient for you. Video recording links and resources will be emailed out within 24 hours of the session.

  • Not at all! You will get benefit from these sessions whenever you join and no prior knowledge is assumed.

I work to a planned schedule and timeline however this is flexible to student requests  so we often revisit content and skills around revision time. You can also catch up on recordings of any prior sessions you’ve missed.

  • No, but I will talk to students about their current strengths and weaknesses and you are welcome to send me examples of student work to help me gauge their starting point.

  • I personally mark student work and provide feedback on how to improve every week. I also use informal, formative assessment during sessions to gauge student progress, alongside the weekly kahoot quiz. I will not give students grades as, in order for this to be accurate, a whole paper would need to be sat. This is a separate service I provide if you would like a more formal, summative assessment.

  • Yes. Every session there will be group feedback on the tasks we complete. Students then receive individual feedback on any work they send me - this can be via email or WhatsApp. Parents can be copied in to this communication and can ask for updates at any time.

  • Having your camera on really helps build rapport. I have students rock up to sessions in their spot cream, pyjamas and even from the car when travelling so there really is no judgement. If your child is particularly anxious, they can try sessions with the camera off to help this. Ultimately, my priority is for students to feel comfortable and to engage with the sessions.

  • Yes! Although I don’t call it that :-P

Students are provided with a weekly ‘feedback task’ that they complete and submit for marking and an option ‘follow up task’ booklet that contains further study and exam practice, should they want to consolidate the session further.

  • There are no group sessions during school holidays. However there are often ‘one off’ revision sessions or exam masterclasses you can attend instead. These are discounted 50% for current students. You can also book one-off 1:1 sessions during the school holidays, occasional weekends and peak times.

  • No. I generally meet with all my students and parents for a completely free Zoom call to show them how tuition works and answer any questions. There is no long-term commitment to group tuition, so if your child tries a session and doesn’t like it, you are not locked into a contract and can leave any time. You will only pay for sessions your child attends. In the unlikely event of me cancelling a session, your payment will roll over for the next week.

  • Absolutely! During the school holidays you can book individual, 1:1 tuition sessions to work over a specific topic or skill of your choosing.
